Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art film city in Poonamallee, signaling a significant leap forward for the Tamil film industry. The announcement came during the ‘Kalaignar 100’ centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, hosted by the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council.
The modern film city, set to be constructed at a cost of ₹500 crore across 140 acres of land, aims to provide a comprehensive suite of facilities, including a luxurious five-star hotel. Actor Kamal Haasan, a prominent figure in the industry, had passionately advocated for the creation of such a film city during the event.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Stalin outlined the ambitious features of the upcoming film city. “The film city will boast cutting-edge amenities, including a massive LED wall, advanced animation and visual effects (VFX) studios, and state-of-the-art production and post-production facilities. Additionally, a five-star hotel will be integrated to cater to the diverse needs of the film fraternity,” he declared.
Stalin, who hails from a family with deep roots in the arts, emphasized his government’s commitment to supporting the film industry. Even his son, Youth Welfare Minister Udhyanidhi Stalin, was actively involved in the film world until recently. “Our Cabinet is closely connected to the film world, and we stand ready to fulfill its requests,” the Chief Minister assured.
In a move to further enhance existing infrastructure, Stalin revealed plans for the construction of four floors at the M.G.R. Film City at an estimated cost of ₹25 crore in the near future.
Remembering the contributions of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to the film industry, Stalin highlighted Karunanidhi’s unparalleled ability to balance political leadership with creative expression. “Even as a leader of a political party and a five-time Chief Minister, he never failed to give full expression to his creativity. He occupied a place in the hearts of people through his writings and multifaceted talents,” Stalin fondly recalled.
The momentous announcement drew the attention of various film personalities, with iconic actor Rajnikanth among those present at the event. As Tamil Nadu gears up for the realization of this visionary project, the modern film city is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the state’s film industry.
