Superprod Animation and its Milan-based subsidiary, Red Monk Studio, have officially begun production on the highly anticipated CG-animated series Underdog, a reimagining of the iconic 1959 cartoon. Commissioned by French broadcasters M6 and Gulli, as well as RAI in Italy, this modern version aims to capture the charm of the original series that aired in the 1960s and remained popular in syndication on networks like NBC, CBS, and Nickelodeon.
The reboot will feature 52 episodes, each lasting 11 minutes, and will target kids and family audiences. Staying true to its roots, Underdog will follow the misadventures of a well-intentioned but clumsy superhero. The show’s updated storyline will maintain the humor and values of the original, such as teamwork, courage, and perseverance. Production is set to take place at Superprod Group’s studios in both France and Italy.
Animation veterans Matt Smith (The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, The Croods) and Shane Morris (Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph) have been brought on as story editors, while Charles Vaucelle, known for his work on Oggy and the Cockroaches and Pat the Dog, will direct.
Superprod Group co-founders Jérémie Fajner and Clément Calvet expressed their excitement about the revival, saying, “With our incredible team of marquee talent, we are thrilled to say, ‘There’s No Need to Fear; Underdog is Here!'”
Pedro Citaristi of Red Monk Studio added, “We are very proud to bring this amazing series to Italy and grateful to RAI and M6 for their trust.” Gulli President Philippe Bony echoed this enthusiasm, stating, “Tender, awkward but brave, Underdog is the kind of hero we love.”
The new Underdog is set for release in 2025 on M6 and Gulli in France, and RAI in Italy. Superights, Superprod Group’s international sales arm, will manage global distribution.
