Netflix has announced that Ed Sheeran has written and recorded an original song titled “Under The Tree” for Locksmith Animation’s forthcoming CG animated feature, “That Christmas.” The film is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, December 6.
The animated feature, produced by Locksmith Animation and directed by animation veteran Simon Otto, known for his work on the “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy, features a star-studded cast including Brian Cox as Santa, Fiona Shaw as Ms. Trapper, Jodie Whittaker as Mrs. Williams, and Bill Nighy as Bill. The screenplay, penned by Richard Curtis and Peter Souter, is based on Curtis’s trilogy of children’s books and weaves together tales of family, friendship, love, and the holiday season.
Ed Sheeran shared his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting his longstanding friendship with Richard Curtis and their previous collaborations. “Richard played me an early rough cut of ‘That Christmas’ two years ago, and I was blown away by its emotional depth and humor. Since becoming a parent, I’ve noticed a lack of great animated Christmas movies for kids, and I felt this project was an amazing opportunity to create something special.”
Sheeran also expressed the personal significance of the project, noting his collaboration with his older brother and the chance to create something for his children. “The scene for which we wrote this song is heart-wrenching but resonates with many people who spend Christmas without their loved ones. It’s a joy to work with my brother and create something meaningful in our home country.”
Director Simon Otto praised Sheeran’s contribution, stating, “Ed’s song inspired us to reshape a key emotional moment in the film, adding depth and interconnection to the storylines. It became the heart of the film, motivating us to deliver our best work. I’m incredibly grateful to Ed for this beautiful piece.”
Richard Curtis, co-writer and executive producer, expressed his delight at Sheeran’s involvement, especially given their shared love for Suffolk, where the film is set. “Ed’s song perfectly captures the pitch and tone of our story. It’s wonderful to have him contribute to a film about love, children, and family. His music brings an additional layer of magic to ‘That Christmas.’”
“That Christmas” follows a series of intertwined tales about family, friends, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, amidst an abundance of turkeys, ensuring it will be a heartwarming addition to the holiday movie canon.
