In celebration of International Women’s Day 2024, a groundbreaking online event is set to showcase the voices and experiences of women in the Visual Effects (VFX) industry. Hosted jointly by World VFX Day and the women’s foundation UpliftHER, the event will feature a diverse lineup of speakers from renowned VFX houses such as ILM, Marvel, Coffee & TV, and more.
Scheduled to take place on International Women’s Day, the event aims to shed light on pertinent issues within the VFX sector and beyond. Among the topics to be discussed are the scarcity of women in senior roles, the challenges of balancing parenthood with a career, LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion, financial literacy, mentoring, and career networking.
Notable speakers slated to share their insights include Charmaine Chan from ILM, Tara DeMarco representing Marvel Studios, Christina Graham from Lightrunner Studio, Kaitlyn Yang of Alpha Studios, Clare Cheetham from Coffee & TV, and Donia Youssef from Monzda TV, alongside other industry experts.
Amy Mercer, co-founder of UpliftHER, emphasized the importance of addressing the differing career experiences between men and women shaped by societal norms and workplace cultures. “It is an uncomfortable truth, but men and women typically experience their careers differently. They are a product moulded by the societies we live in and the cultures we work in, and that’s why these talks are important,” Mercer remarked.
The event promises to be a pivotal moment for the VFX industry, providing a platform for women to share their perspectives, challenges, and achievements while fostering discussions aimed at driving positive change and greater inclusivity within the field.
